Cross-platform use

Serenity is an essential quality of any home, and while the majority of us do a great job keeping the peace, it ultimately becomes difficult especially with shared living spaces.

Nest lets you manage your home right from your handheld smart device, giving you access to every aspect of your home such as the lighting, security cams, heat, laundry and CO levels among other quality items.

Features

Nest uses sensors and algorithms to regulate different functions within your home, vis-à-vis your phone location. Nest also allows you to set up family accounts and provide everyone with passwords so that they can access the system easily.

Features provided include:

  • The Nest Learning Thermostat and Thermostat E: Control the temperature of your home from anywhere. You can check out your energy stats, and view and edit scheduled heating. If you set up alerts, the app will notify you if your home becomes too cold or hot. Nest also lets you earn Leafs for energy points that you save.
  • Nest Secure Alarm: You’re able to arm and disarm your home remotely, check event triggers to see what set off alarms, get reminders and alerts in case you left the house without activating security, check family accounts history, etc.
  • Nest Protect: With an Internet connection, your system can detect carbon monoxide levels and send immediate alerts to your phone or sound off alarms.
  • Nest Security Cams: Lets you see all activity, both inside and outside of your home, and also enables talk-back to let someone know they are being watched.

Usability

The Nest experience isn’t the best according to most users who already feel that the hardware system is among the more expensive home security systems. Video playback is slow and unresponsive, although the live video feed works just fine. The thermostat takes forever to respond to temperature changes, and the app doesn’t sync with some of its own devices.

You’ll need at least iOS 10.0 if you want to use the app on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or Apple TV. The Android compatibility varies with the device.
